The key ingredient of any British tea estate bungalow was the beloved ‘Appu’ best described as a mix of personal butler and cook, and Ceylon Tea Bungalows – Bandarawela has one of the best and most friendliest of them all, simply called ‘Appu’
Along with Appu is a small collection of dedicated staff sourced from villages and other boutique hotels around the island.
The old tea estate bungalows of yesteryear were staffed by dedicated, well trained Tamil butlers called ‘Appu’s’ who prepared delicious ‘home made’ cuisine for English planters.
At Ceylon Tea Bungalows – Bandarawela, this tradition is lovingly continued with Appu and his team delivering a choice of Sri Lankan Rice And Curry or Western ‘Courses’ meals (comprising soups. meat and English vegetables) that were especially made to suit the appetites of English planters and their families.
Guests are totally free to wander around the tea estate. In the morning they can join a team of 11 resident estate tea pluckers and learn the art of hand-picking ‘two leaves and a bud’.
In the evening staff can set up a dinner barbecue right in the middle of the estate among tea bushes for the ultimate ‘dinner under a thousand stars’.
